23 04 2009

Yes, on Friday, April 17, CNN (@CNN with 80,494 followers) acquired the Twitter account  @CNNBrk with 1, 168,990 followers. @CNNBrk is a Twitter feed that delivered links to alert followers of CNN Breaking News. So, we see that people are being rewarded for selling their followers it is possible that a blackmarket economy will surface. People will continue using dirty tricks to build large numbers of followers, then sell those accounts to big corporations. It will result in be a large number of accounts that suddenly turn into sources of Twitter spam, and a large number of users who feel they’ve been tricked.

Many who were following @CNNBrk thought they following CNN itself. They had no idea that it was just some guy that had registered the @CNNBrk name, uploaded the CNN logo and then fed links to CNN content. CNN’s acquisition of @CNNBrk showed everyone us all username squatting on Twitter pays even though it is officially against the rules.  We can expect to see millions of people signing up using trademarked IP, hoping to cash in later. Twitter Sold to Google?

3 04 2009

Not yet…the CEO of Twitter, Ev William (@ev) sold Blogger (@blogger)  to Google (@google), but it seems like the sale of google-twitterTwitter is a deal that may be closed soon according to Mike Arrington from TechCrunch, who referenced two unnamed sources in a post late Thursday. Mike first reported talks were in the late stage, and then later updated his post to say they’re in early, but that the two companies are said to be considering working together on a real-time search engine.

Do you think it would hurt Twitter? Do you think that readership would go down if Google bought them?

A few months ago the talks of  Facebook aquiring Twitter did not end in a sale, will this one? Biz Stone (@biz), co-founder of, who also worked to create Xanga, Blogger, Odeo, and Obvious,  said last night that they have ‘time to figure out their revenue model’ and portrayed one who is not in a hurry to sell out.  I don’t think we should be fooled by his calm posture since he quickly profitted from the sale of Blogger to Google (although he does not keep us his Blogger site at www.bizstone.com, other than the twitter feed on the site). Biz Stone wrote on April 1 on the Twitter blog (which is a Google Blogspot blog) about the new search feature that has Google on it’s knees.

The rumors of Google buying Twitter are not new but NOW is the time for Twitter to sell as it’s on the top of the tech hype rollercoaster. Last month, Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, said on the PBS Charlie Rose show that  “Google will be ready to make a deal (with Twitter) when the price is right. The good news is we have lots of capital. The bad news is we’re still trying to get everybody into the model that we really want in terms of M&A. And I think it’ll start soon, but it’s pretty inactive right now.”
